I'd like to recommend "How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big" by Scott Adams, author of Dilbert. One part of the book talks exactly about why goals don't work and how he prefers "systems" instead. His use of the word system really means "habit". The basic idea is that with a goal you're in a perpetual state of failure until you actually hit that goal, and then you're in another state of failure until you try to reach the next goal. If you use a habit mindset instead, you're constantly succeeding at the habit every day that you perform it. It's well worth reading.
